Scarring & Stretchmarks
Vincentia Laser & Skin Clinic is equipped with numerous state of the art lasers that can help improve the appearance of scars and stretchmarks.
What are scars & stretchmarks?
Scars are areas of fibrous tissue (fibrosis) that replace normal skin after injury. A scar results from the biological process of wound repair in the skin and other tissues of the body. Scarring is a natural part of the healing process. With the exception of very superficial lesions, every wound results in some degree of scarring. No laser is capable of eliminating scars or stretchmarks completely but we now have the ability to significantly improve the appearance of both.
Stretchmarks occur during pregnancy, puberty or a period of rapid weight gain when your body grows faster than your skin can keep up with. This causes the elastic fibres just under the surface of the skin to break, resulting in stretch marks. Stretchmarks can also show up on the thighs, buttocks and upper arms. The marks often start out reddish or purple, but gradually fade to white or grey.
What happens during treatment?
During the initial consultation Dr White will discuss with you the best treatment options. Generally, we treat scars & stretch marks in the following ways:
- For reddish stretchmarks we can use our ND YAG to reduce their vascularity and make them less noticeable
- For white, fibrous, atrophic or hypertrophic scars and stretchmarks, the ablative capabilities of the CO2 laser works best in this situation.
An air cooling system and local anaesthetic can reduce the discomfort.
How many treatments will I need?
It depends on the severity or size of the scar, but we would expect to see an improvement after 2-3 sessions. As the collagen remodels itself long after the procedure, the appearance of the scar should continue to improve over the subsequent 6-12 months.
